Marc-Antoine Bartoli, activist and militant in life as through his interests and his artistic work, engages in the fight against AIDS and becomes president of Act Up-Paris in March 2018. After the publication of a collection photographic entitled Escapade in 2019, he exhibits his images for the first time at the Galerie du Lendemain.
Marc-Antoine Bartoli was born and raised in Corsica. Far from the anecdote, his images oscillate between an eternal return to Mediterranean insularity and its emancipation. From these origins, a whole culture, human and natural, contemporary or older, unfolds in the details he captures during his photographic wanderings. He develops a practice nourished by theory and iconology and sees in film photography the possibility of a plural production whose ambiguous nature fascinates him. Film honesty also allows images to be transformed during development, especially to play, as he likes to do, with exposure and overexposure. His instinctive approach to shooting is sublimated by the technique, and it is from the motif that the range of possible narratives emerges. An intimate photographer and gleaner of social and political traces, past or present, he cites among his visual references the work of Agnès Varda or Bernard Plossu. We find in the images of this diligent reader the tone of the authors who put into words the subjects which animate him: Joan Didion, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Annie Ernaux and Hervé Guibert.
